Downtown Holland Gallery Walk

Friday February 08, 6:00 PM - Saturday February 9, 2008, 4:00 PM

The galleries of Downtown Holland will be presenting artists and delightful tasty treats during the annual Gallery Walk.

Last November the Symphony Orchestra and galleries commissioned local artists to hand paint five retired violins and one viola to be auctioned off at the end of the event. The auction is a project of Holland Symphony Orchestra League to fundraise for the Holland Symphony.

The galleries are collecting silent bids for each violin until 4:00pm Saturday, February 9th and the Symphony will announce the winners at 5:00pm.

To stroll the Galleries and make your bids begin with Shaker Messenger at 210 S. River Avenue and violin artist Marcia Lengkeek : Being a Dutch immigrant inspires artist Marcia Lengkeek to explore traditional folk art from many countries resulting in her main focus, “Hindeloopen,” an art form from her native country, the Netherlands. Hindeloopen dates back to the 1600’s and is still practiced by artists in the village of Hindeloopen, Friesland. Marcia uses acrylics to decorate a variety of surfaces. She has been painting, teaching and selling folk art for more than 30 years. She has traveled extensively, demonstrating and speaking about the art of Hindeloopen. She is a member of the Society of Decorative Artists, and West Michigan Decorative Artists. She has received many honors for her work. Marcia painted a tulip for the Tall Tulips project that can be seen along Holland’s River Avenue called “McTulip” in a take-off from McDonalds. She also painted the entry areas and wooden shoe room counters, and high chairs at Dutch Village as well as signs for Windmill Island.

Lake Effect Gallery at 29 West 8th Street hosts violin artist Beth Charles. Born and raised in Michigan, Beth and her family have been residents of Holland since 1987. She is a cum laude graduate of the University of Michigan having earned her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts with concentrations in painting, drawing, and illustration. Prior to returning to Holland, Beth painted and exhibited in Dallas, Texas and Los Angeles. Beth’s favorite media is acrylic and watercolor in a wide variety of dimensions. Beth’s design and color sense and ability to demonstrate painting techniques effortlessly have lead to her success in teaching and leading workshops for The Holland Friends of Arts and Lake Effect Galleries art camps and classes.

Castle Park Gallery at 8 East 8th Street hosts violin artist Mae VanArk. Mae is a professional artist and teaches a wide variety of students for the Holland Area Arts Council. Her students range from talented adults, home school students and Quest, a program for gifted elementary school students. Mae has dedicated many years to teaching and working with the mentally disabled through VSA Arts of Grand Haven and Art for All program at the Holland Area Arts Council. Mae has numerous awards and has published in The Best Of Watercolor, Rockport Publishers Inc., Gloucester, Massachusetts. Her work is represented in the area at Castle Park Gallery and The Timmel Collections in Saugatuck.

Moynihan Gallery at 28 East 8th Street hosts viola artist Kathleen VanTubergen. The “Violinist in the Window” wood burned imagery on this violin is based on a painting of the same title by Otto Franz Scholderer. Kathleen presently teaches at Evergreen Commons and does many murals for special events. She says her favorite is to work plein air, often strapping equipment on the back of her bike in search of inspiration or an easel in the back of her paint mobile when the weather is less cooperative.

Holland Area Arts Council at 150 East 8th Street hosts violin artists Michele R. Gort and Alicia R. Bierling. Michele is a graduate of Kendall College of Arts and Design. She works as a freelance designer in her studio, Designs by Michele Renee, and aspires to her passion: creating paintings. She enjoys using bold spontaneous paint strokes to capture the true effect of color and light. It is Michele’s desire to communicate passion and emotion to the viewer in each piece she creates.

Uptown Gallery at 205 Columbia Avenue hosts violin artist Vicki Beyer. Vicki has won a variety of awards in juried shows and has works in private and corporate collections. Mediums of choice are oil, pastel and acrylics. Over the last 30 years, Vicki’s art has evolved to reflect her experiences, love of nature and her local surroundings. Her use of vibrant colors infuses her artwork with an upbeat energy. For her, art is a passionate language that does not need to rely on words, and is able to speak to each of us in a different way.

All violins are on exhibit and are open to bids at each gallery through February 9th. Visit the Holland Symphony web site at www.hollandsymphony.org to see photos of each violin and catch up on the latest bid for your favorite violin or viola.
