Ice Sculpting Competition
Friday January 08 - Saturday January 9, 2010
Downtown Holland Ice Sculpting Competition
For the second year in a row, Downtown Holland is partnering with the National Ice Carving Association (NICA) to host a weekend-long Collegiate Invitational Ice Sculpting Competition. This is one “cool” event you won’t want to miss!
Friday, January 8:
Buffet Sculpture Competition
6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
Head Downtown Friday night and watch in amazement as college students from the Midwest and beyond create frozen masterpieces from giant blocks of ice! The sculptures these talented competitors carve are designed to be displayed at restaurant buffets, wedding receptions, and other special events. The sculptures will remain on display Downtown through Saturday.
(Throughout 8th Street)
Saturday, January 9:
Carving Demonstration
10:00 am to 11:00 am
In this ice sculpting demonstration by an award-winning master carver, you’ll get a chance to learn what carving techniques make an ice sculpture a NICA competition winner. Based on what you learn, which team do you think will come out on top?
(GDK Park Next to Cold Stone Creamery)
Collegiate Invitational Competition
12:30 pm to 4:30 pm
This is the event that you’ve been waiting all winter for! Competitors will have four hours to transform a 300-pound block of ice into a glistening work of art, using everything from chainsaws to chisels, and power drills to hot irons. Watch as the ice flies, then be sure to check out the finished pieces at the end of the competition! Each sculpture will be judged according to official NICA standards. Winners will be announced publicly later that night.
(Throughout 8th Street)
