It's Farm Market Season!

It's finally Farm Market season and Holland has more opportunities than ever to find locally homegrown foods and home baked goodies.

Holland's biggest market is the Farmer's Market with over 50 vendors at the Eighth Street Marketplace near the Civic Center at 150 W 8th Street.  This market is open Wednesdays and Saturdays starting at 8am. I encourage you to check out their website, join their email newsletter or like them on Facebook to get up-to-date information on what is currently in season and what items will be showing up at the market in the weeks ahead. They also host special events. On Saturdays, a local chef shows you what can be prepared using the items at the market. On Wednesdays, kids can participate in a market-based activity such as a scavenger hunt, making vegetable dolls, or visiting with baby farm animals. The schedules are also posted on the Farmer's Market website.

Another local market which will be bigger and better this year is the Park Township Farmer's Market at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds at 1286 Ottawa Beach Road. The market opens Friday, May 24 with an Arts & Crafts Fair including over 20 vendors. Regular farm vendors each week include: Abuelo's Farm, Black River Trading Co., Bowerman's Blueberries, Carini Farms, Crisp Country Acres, Diemer's Winter Gardens, Dosie Doe Farm, Dutchman Orchard, the Great Bread Company, G & E Granola, and Larry's Farm & Market. The market continues each Friday from 9am-2pm until September 13. New this year is the kid's corner from 9:30-11 featuring a different craft, and special events throughout the season. Like their Facebook page or check out our calendar of events for details.

The newest addition to the community of farm markets is the Eighth Day Farm Stand located in the parking lot of the Holland Town Center at 12330 James Street. Eighth Day Farm uses no synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides on their products. And believe it or not, the crops are grown right in the midst of the Holland Town Center parking lot! The Farm Stand will open for the season on June 10 and their hours are Monday through Friday 4-6pm and Saturdays 9am-1pm.

And lastly, a local favorite market is continuing to expand. Bowerman's Blueberries has a farm market building opening for the season on June 10. Bowerman's offers their own blueberries in season, and fresh baked goods - blueberry flavored, of course. The fresh blueberry donuts are a must-try! They also offer a variety of locally-grown produce. Let the kids play on the wooden farm tractor and wagon while you shop and treat them to a frozen yogurt or fruit smoothie. Bowerman's will offer U-pick of its blueberries this summer for the first time, and it also offers a fall season U-pick hydroponic strawberry season! Bowerman's is located at 15793 James Street and is open Monday-Saturday 8am-8pm.
