From November 21 through December 20, the 8th Street Marketplace in Holland, Michigan transforms into the Kerstmarkt, a charming European-style holiday market filled with twinkling lights, wooden booths, and the gentle buzz of people savoring the season. With a warm cup of glühwein in hand, it’s easy to feel as if you’ve stepped into a small winter market somewhere in Europe—no passport required.

Because the Kerstmarkt is a true open-air experience, bundling up becomes part of the tradition. Layer your coziest scarf, zip into your warmest coat, and step into the festive atmosphere. The cool air pairs perfectly with the glow of the lights and the comfort of a warm drink. Thanks to Holland’s snowmelt sidewalks, you can wander the market comfortably as you explore each booth.

As you stroll, you’ll find rows of artisan vendors offering handcrafted goods—wooden homewares, cozy mittens, jewelry, baked treats, and seasonal décor- plenty of beautiful options for holiday gifting.

Kerstmarkt

Dutch traditions come to life through baked favorites like banket, a flaky almond-filled pastry brushed with a citrus glaze. You might snack on spiced speculaas cookies, a perfect companion to any hot beverage, or try a warm sourdough stroopwafel with rich caramel. Sourdough stollen filled with dried fruit and almond paste offers a classic holiday taste, while cinnamon knots with orange-vanilla icing, sea salt caramel chocolate chunk cookies, and fresh-baked apple dumplings topped with cinnamon butter bring extra comfort to the experience.

Each Friday and Saturday starting at 3 PM, the Kerstmarkt also features a rotating dinner menu—hearty, winter-ready meals that make lingering into the evening even more inviting. It’s the perfect way to warm up before continuing your holiday shopping. (Check the menu here.)

Throughout the season, the atmosphere is brought to life with carolers in Dickens attire, the bright ring of handbells, and occasional visits from Santa, Mrs. Claus, the Grinch, and even Sinterklaas. These moments add an extra layer of magic, making the market feel like a page pulled from a holiday storybook.

Between the warm treats, artisan booths, glowing lights, and lively holiday music, the Kerstmarkt offers a delightful winter tradition in downtown Holland—one that blends European charm with West Michigan hospitality. Come explore the Kerstmarkt and make it part of your holiday tradition.
