The Statues of Downtown Holland

 

Geertje & Cornelis: These life-size statues in traditional Dutch dress honor the history and heritage of Holland, Michigan. Artist: Billie Clark. 6th Street at College Ave.

The Valentine: Gracing the grounds of Freedom Village, this statue portrays an older couple sharing a Valentine. Artist: George Lundeen. 

Pledge of Allegiance: A delightful collection of children honoring the flag. Artist: Glenna Goodacre. 

Joy of Music: This collection of five statues includes three musicians and two singing children in the beautiful Alpenrose Park. Artist: George Lundeen. 

Ben Franklin: Join Ben Franklin as he sits on a park bench reading the Declaration of Independence. Artist: Mark Lundeen. 

Contemplation: Inspired by the artist's sister, this lifesize bronze sculpture is of a young woman sitting on a bench, holding a book. Artist: Billie Houtman Clark. 

Secret Garden: A charming life-size sculpture of two young girls sitting on a marble bench reading The Secret Garden. Artist: Mark Lundeen. 

Van Raalte Statue: This statue of the Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte, founder of Holland and Hope College, was given to the city for its Sesquicentennial in 1997. Located in Centennial Park, the statue faces toward Hope College and Pillar Church, Holland's first church, built by Van Raalte. 

Grandpa's Workbench: Placed in the courtyard of Evergreen Commons, a grandfather is building stilts with his grandchildren at his workbench. Artist: Gary Alsum. 

Immigrants Statue: Lake Macatawa is an appropriate setting for immigrants arriving on the shores of a new land. This statue was donated in 1997 by the Dutch province of Drenthe, to commemorate Holland's Sesquicentennial. Artist: Bert Kievit. 

Water Lily: A young girl sits on a tree stump with water flowing in rivulets from the lily in her hand into a pool below. Artist: Rosalind Cook. 

Queretaro Fountain: Given to Holland in 1999 by our sister city, Queretaro, Mexico, this marble fountain stands as a symbol of friendship between the two communities. 

Perro Del Sol (Sun Dog): Hope College professor Billy Mayer created this colorful steelwork in front of Herrick District Library. 

The Protector: A Holland police officer holds the hand of a little girl in front of the Holland Police Station. Artist: Neil Brodin, Brodin Studios. 

 

 

Padnos Sculptures: Located along Pine Ave. north of 7th St., and at 7th St. and Lincoln Ave., these sculptures were created from scrap metal by Stuart Padnos of Louis Padnos Iron & Metal Company.
