Big water anglers looking for serious action and tournament camaraderie need look no further than Holland, Michigan, home to the iconic Big Red Classic Sport Fishing Tournament. Each year, the event returns the first weekend in August, bringing with it over 30 years of sport fishing history and a high-energy community of anglers.

The tournament’s roots stretch back to 1991, when just 19 boats competed in the original Big Red Dutchman Classic, and the first-place trophy was a pair of wooden shoes. Today, hundreds of participants sail to Yacht Basin Marina to compete for serious bragging rights and a $10,000 grand prize during four days of world-class fishing on Lake Michigan’s legendary waters.

The action kicks off with the Tulip City Tri-Port, where teams weigh their best seven fish from three eligible harbors. The main event—the Big Red Classic—follows, featuring divisions for pro, amateur, and women anglers. But this isn’t just about the thrill of the catch. All fish caught during the tournament can be donated onsite to two local nonprofits: The Order of Naucratius of Holland, which helps feed the hungry by connecting anglers with food ministries, and Teen Challenge of Grand Haven, a long-term, faith-based recovery program offering hope and healing to those battling addiction. Tournament proceeds go even further, supporting the Holland Hospital Breast Care Fund, the Boys and Girls Club of Western Michigan, and Salmon in the Classroom, a Michigan DNR initiative giving thousands of students the opportunity to raise, learn from, and release young Chinook salmon into approved waterways. It’s a tournament with heart – making every cast count, both on and off the water.

Big Red Classic Fishers

What's biting?

In July and August, offshore fishing is excellent in Holland. Expect strong trolling for Chinook salmon, steelhead, and lake trout in the deep waters of Lake Michigan. Nearshore action picks up around the Holland piers, while Lake Macatawa and the Macatawa River offer solid inland options for lake trout, walleye, and bass.

After the final fish hits the scales, Holland serves up plenty of post-fishing perks. Kick back at Boatwerks overlooking the lake, catch live music downtown, or cruise over to Holland State Park for a sunset pier walk by the Big Red Lighthouse. Weeknights bring Wednesday sailboat races, Thursday street performers, and Friday concerts in Kollen Park. Add in miles of scenic bike trails, U-pick farms, and award-winning breweries, and you’ve got more than just a fishing trip—you’ve got a full summer getaway.

Whether you're chasing trophies or just looking for a great weekend on the water, Holland is ready to welcome you.
